You would need to spend in excess of $3500 in order to get a HD camcorder that can beat the video quality of a MiniDV camcorder like the GL2.
the short answer is no.
the long answer is no. image pixel count is only one dimension of quality. the typical consumer HD camera uses AVCHD codec so it only records 4 HD pictures per second. the missing frames have to be guessed at on playback by interpolation. that is why skateboarders and action sports people stick with miniDV which makes 30 real fps, no guessing or interpolation used on playback. the only good subject for consumer HD is to document paint drying on a wall. it is useless for motion. the canon gl2 is a 3 ccd system camera, it produces excellent full saturated color in many situations that a single ccd camera cannot. the third criteria of quality is digital data rate. miniDV is 25 mbps, most consumer HD is 6 mbps. there are lots of other reasons a consumer camera does not hold up in comparison.
And to continue with the world of no theme – the lenses in higher end cameras are much higher quality, but that comes at a high price. They’re also much bigger, so you get more light in and hence a better signal to noise ratio. Not directly relevant to the image quality, higher end cameras have much more control, and include work flow management tools that the amateur doesn’t need.
